Going with the Flow – Topographic Playgrounds That Embrace the Natural Terrain
Unlike classic playgrounds built on flat, leveled ground, the latest trend in landscape playground design (especially in public open spaces) is to embrace the site's natural topography—and flow with it.
Each of these projects is custom-designed to match the unique shape and slope of the land.
In the example shown here from Moskowitz Park in Sderot, the playground is built on a natural hillside, incorporating:
Two barrel slides that descend with the slope
Two rope mats and climbing pathways integrated into the incline
At the top of the hill: play towers with bridges, wheelchair-accessible elements, slides, and interactive play panels
Topographic playgrounds are rich in movement and creativity—so much so that even in completely flat areas, we often receive requests to artificially build mounds beneath the safety surfacing. These artificial hills are then fitted with slides and bridges, simulating a natural landscape and offering a more dynamic play experience.
