Designing a Musical Playground for the Public Realm - A Large All-Ages Play and Sound Space

Psagot Playgrounds delivered a large, all-ages musical playground for the public realm. The municipality expanded and upgraded the space, creating an active music-making environment that invites free exploration across multiple instruments. Key features include a striking harp-shaped entrance element, an interactive music wall, tuned instruments, and special guidance signage that enables play by color even without reading notes.

Designing a Musical Playground for the Public Realm - A Large All-Ages Play and Sound Space

About the Project and the Process

This project was planned as a public musical playground designed for shared community use - children, teens, and adults.

The goal was to shape a musical play environment that connects between several sound stations and encourages creativity, collaboration, and curiosity.

Over time, the local authority chose to enlarge and enhance the site, resulting in a richer set of instruments and a more complete overall experience.

Highlights/Uniqueness of the Project

  • A harp-shaped entrance element that creates a strong first impression at the gateway to the space
  • An interactive music wall where striking the elements produces a real, recognizable song
  • A variety of percussion and tuned instruments that support both free play and guided play through dedicated signage
  • Visual wayfinding through colorful lines on the surface that help users read the space and move between stations
  • A large musical playground suitable for all ages
  • Full accessibility across the space
  • A wide range of instruments tuned to musical notes

The design approach treated the playground as a continuous exploration route, not just a collection of musical elements. Stations were positioned to support easy movement from one instrument to the next - stop, try, play, and continue. Layout and surface planning were aligned with the accessibility requirement and with the idea that different user groups can engage simultaneously. The result supports both open-ended play and structured play using the on-site guidance signage.

The visual language combines music with a clear, colorful identity. Surface color lines help define routes and zones, while a long musical wall with bright elements adds rhythm and interest along the perimeter. Instrument selection focused on delivering a range of sounds - from focused, tuned tones to instruments that invite spontaneous percussion play.
