Story Playground Design with Hot Air Balloon Play Towers

Psagot Playgrounds designed a story-inspired playground for a large new residential neighborhood, as part of a wider development that included multiple public play areas planned for a major wave of occupancy.

At the heart of the site stands an impressive hot air balloon play structure, supported by complementary play elements that create a varied and engaging experience.

A unique addition to the project is a series of printed panels with balloon-themed illustrations, designed to match the visual language of the main structure and add another layer of imagination to the space.

About the Project and the Process

This project focused on designing a story playground with hot air balloon play towers that connects physical play, imagination, and visual storytelling within one public setting.

Because the playground was created as part of a large new neighborhood, it was important to build a space with a strong identity, a clear visual presence, and an experience suited to everyday use by families and children of different ages.

Beyond the play value itself, the project was planned to bring an additional cultural and educational layer into the public realm in a soft and natural way.

Integrating printed visual panels into the playground helps encourage curiosity, observation, conversation, and imaginative interpretation as part of the visit.

Rather than separating play from content, the design allows both to exist together, so the playground becomes a place not only of movement and activity, but also of language, ideas, and shared moments between children and adults.

The main identity of the project comes from the impressive hot air balloon towers, which give the playground a memorable and recognizable character. Design Phase

During the design phase, emphasis was placed on creating a clear relationship between the central landmark structure and the supporting play elements around it. The hot air balloon installation was planned as the heart of the playground, with a strong visual presence and a form that encourages climbing, movement, transition, and sliding. Additional elements were incorporated to expand the range of activity in the site, including balancing, motion play, bouncing, swinging, and challenge-based experiences. At the same time, the printed balloon-themed panels were integrated as part of the overall concept, so the visual content would feel fully connected to the design rather than added afterward

Design Concept

The design language of the playground is based on the world of hot air balloons, with tall structures, rounded forms, and a lively colour palette that creates a strong visual impact in the public space. The main play towers establish the identity of the site from the first glance, while the supporting elements reinforce the sense of movement, height, and adventure. The printed balloon-themed panels complete the concept by adding a softer imaginative layer that supports the overall atmosphere. The result is a playground with play value, visual clarity, and a memorable character
