Planning and Building an Innovative Playground for a New Residential Community

As part of the development of a new residential community, Psagot Playgrounds was selected through a large design-build tender to create a series of innovative public playgrounds.

This project was planned as a large, joyful and memorable play environment that connects nature, birds, climbing, imagination and light. The playground includes three main play zones: a central multi-age play area, a large challenge net area and an artistic robinia play structure inspired by a bird form.

Together, they create a flowing, impressive and highly experiential public playground designed for municipalities, new neighborhoods and active community spaces.

About the Project and the Process

The project began with a clear goal: to create more than a standard playground.

The intention was to design a central public play destination for a growing residential area, with a strong visual identity and a wide variety of play experiences.

The concept was translated into a nature-inspired playground language. The central area includes a tall, green and inviting play structure with bridges, climbing nets, slides and transparent enclosure elements.

A second area adds a large-scale ropes and climbing experience, with routes for movement, balance and challenge. A third area introduces an artistic robinia structure shaped around a bird-inspired concept, combining climbing, discovery and imaginative play.

The playground was planned to support activity for hundreds of children and families at the same time, while maintaining a clear division between play zones and comfortable movement throughout the space.

The central area includes multi-age play, an accessible carousel, swings for toddlers and older children, a basket swing, spring riders and additional play elements. The challenge area offers a large ropes-based play experience with climbing and movement routes.

The robinia area combines climbing walls, cable nets, inner play spaces and egg-shaped elements that strengthen the nesting story.

One of the project’s most distinctive features is the integrated lighting. Lighting appears in the central structure, the slides, the upper tower area and the swings.

This is a proprietary lighting concept developed by Psagot Playgrounds, initiated and proposed by the brand as part of the overall play experience.

The lighting adds a magical layer in the evening, highlights the architectural form of the structures and gives the playground a vivid, colorful and memorable presence.

Highlights/Uniqueness of the Project

This project stands out for its combination of scale, storytelling and play value. Instead of one isolated play structure, the playground is built as a complete environment with several complementary zones. Children can climb, swing, slide, balance, crawl, explore, rotate and play together across different levels of challenge.

The design connects natural forms, bird imagery, green tones, climbing nets and sculptural robinia elements into one clear visual language. The result is a playground that feels fun, flowing, experiential, magical and impressive, while still being planned as a durable public space for intensive daily use.

Client Requirements

The project was required to serve a new residential community and a central public open space. The client needed a large, innovative playground with a strong visual presence, a broad range of activities, suitability for different age groups and meaningful inclusion for children with special needs.

The main requirements included innovation, originality, a design connected to the surrounding environment, accessibility, adaptation to local needs, high-quality materials, safety and durability for intensive public use.

Design Phase

During the design phase, the playground was divided into three complementary activity zones. The central area was planned around a multi-age structure that supports climbing, movement, sliding and discovery across several levels. Around it, accessible and social play elements were added, including an accessible carousel, spring riders and varied swings.

The challenge zone was designed as a large ropes-based play area for climbing, movement and adventure. It includes nets, transition routes, HDPE stepping elements, rubber sheets and activities that encourage climbing, crawling, jumping, hanging, balancing and swinging.

The artistic robinia zone was planned as a sculptural play element inspired by a bird form. It includes a geometric timber body, climbing walls, cable nets, inner play spaces, an open slide, a rope hammock and egg-shaped elements that enrich the play story.

Design Concept

The design is based on a world of groves, birds, nesting and movement in nature. The green color palette, leaf shapes, tall structure, climbing nets and large sculptural bird-inspired element create one clear design language: a playground that feels like a natural play world, while being carefully planned as a precise, durable and functional public system.

The robinia structure adds an artistic and narrative layer. Its natural wood, earth tones and colorful details invite children to climb, move through inner spaces, test their balance and play around the egg-shaped elements. It becomes more than a play object - it becomes a central character in the story of the park.

The lighting is also part of the design. It was not added only as a technical feature, but as an experiential element that emphasizes the lines of the structures, the upper tower area, the slides and the swing zone. This creates a playground with a strong evening presence and a sense of wonder, movement and color.
